Hilton Head Island, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team succumbed to a 7-2 setback at the hands of Edgewood College Thursday morning in their final match at the PTR Spring TennisFest.
The Seahawks (4-5) came into the match today confident following a great victory over Ramapo College the day before.
In the doubles matches, the Seahawks failed to tally a point against the Eagles and Edgewood moved ahead, 3-0. Senior Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and sophomore Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) gave first-years Marissa Wilson (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and Libby Protz (New Berlin, Wis./Brookfield Central) a run for their money in the No. 3 doubles match, forcing extra games but the Edgewood duo outlasted the Seahawks, 9-7, for the win.
Moving into singles play, sophomore Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) was able to grab the first point for the Seahawks in the No. 1 singles match against EC's senior Morgan Wilson (Verona, Wis./Verona Area), 6-0, 6-3.
The Eagles proceeded to comeback from this loss and tallied the next four points to take a commanding 7-1 lead. The Seahawks would not be taken down by the looming loss as Johnson played her second marathon match of the day.
Johnson picked up a 6-4 win in the first set of the No. 6 singles match against first-year Haley Brooks (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) before winning a heated tiebreaker. Johnson outdueled Brooks, 9-7, in the tie-break game to claim the second set, 7-6 (9-7), and St. Mary's second and final point of the match.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, March 19 as they take on Capital Athletic Conference opponent, York College of Pennsylvania at the Somerset Tennis Complex at 12:00 p.m.
