Bel Air, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team defeated the No. 25 Harford Community College Fighting Owls Saturday afternoon, 7-2, in an exhibition match.
The Seahawks started the match off very strong, going up 2-1 in doubles play. All three matches were hard fought with sophomore Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and junior Marissa Romanek (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) dropping a heartbreaking 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, seniors Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) and Liza Moore (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted the most dominating score of the day, 8-0, over sophomore Ellen Creswell (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) and first-year Rachel Hall.
As the teams moved into singles play, the Fighting Owls (1-2) jumped out to tie the match 2-2 as first-year Sarah Hadjeras (Wattrelos, France/Lycee Emile Zola), who is ranked No. 50 in the ITA/NJCAA National Women's Singles Rankings, handed Barall a 6-4, 7-5 setback at No. 1 singles.
It was all Seahawks for the rest of the day as St. Mary's finished out the day on a 5-0 match run. Senior Anna Passaniti (Hereford, Md./Hereford) won her second match of the day in exhilarating fashion, winning the first game, 6-0, while the second one did not come easy in a 7-6 (7-5) battle.
The Seahawks' next match will be against Frostburg State University on Tuesday, March 15 as they begin Capital Athletic Conference play in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
