St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team opened up the 2015-16 season this weekend. The Seahawks (1-1) first traveled to The Catholic University of America (1-0) on Saturday, dropping a 6-3 decision, before bouncing back with an 8-1 victory over Hood College (0-2) on Sunday in their home-opener.
Sunday's victory gives first-year head coach Tyler Robinson his first career coaching win.
Marissa Romanek and senior Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) gave St. Mary's a 1-0 lead at Catholic with an 8-4 victory over first-year Erin Cole (Clarksville, Md.) and sophomore Jenna Gietl (Montgomery, Ala.) at No. 2 doubles.
The Cardinals jumped to a 3-1 advantage before Rost posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over sophomore Maria Flores (Brookeville, Md.) to cut the lead to one. CUA gained a two-point lead again behind a win at No. 5 singles before sophomore Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory over junior Laura Torsiello (Bayport, N.Y.) at No. 1 singles for a 4-3 match lead for Catholic.
CUA went on to win at No. 6 and No. 3 singles for its season-opening 6-3 win.
In facing Hood on Sunday, the Seahawks only dropped nine games in posting the 8-1 victory. St. Mary's started the match with a 2-0 lead as the Blazers traveled one player short. The Seahawks then swept the two doubles matches.
Rost finished the weekend with a combined singles and doubles record of 4-0 after teaming up with Romanek for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles before garnering a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over junior Meghan Donohue (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) at No. 4 singles.
Hood avoided the shutout as sophomore Michelle Shedd (Middletown, Md./Middletown) tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.
St. Mary's will be back in action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on September 26-28. The regional tournament is hosted by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
