Owings Mills, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team halted their losing streak at two as the Seahawks rebounded with a 9-0 blanking of the Stevenson University Mustangs in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.
Sophomores Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) started off the match for the Seahawks (13-9) with an 8-3 win over seniors Susannah Hoblitzell (Towson, Md.) and Megan Heagy (Bel Air, Md.) at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and sophomore Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) followed with an 8-3 win over junior Katie Fersch (Mechanicsville, Md.) and sophomore Svetlana Widell (St. Michael's, Md.) at No. 2 doubles.
The Seahawks finished sweeping the doubles matches as senior Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and first-year Emily Rost (Germantown, Md.) picked up an 8-4 triumph over juniors Jordan Rupard (Traceys Landing, Md.) and Rachel Sandora (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) at No. 3 doubles.
E. Rost continued the rout for the Seahawks with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over senior Rachel Mullet (Woodbine, Md.) followed by first-year Anna Passaniti's (White Hall, Md./Hereford) 11th singles win of the season, a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fersch at No. 5 singles.
The winning was prolonged by Stine's 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Widell at No. 4 singles while Stumpfig notched her team-leading 13th singles win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Heagy at No. 2 singles. Ramsey was the only St. Mary's player not to drop a single game as she posted a double-bagel victory over Hoblitzell at No. 1 singles.
L. Rost finished off the match for St. Mary's with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Rupard at No. 3 singles.
The Seahawks will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, April 16 as St. Mary's travels to Washington College for a non-conference match at 3:00 pm.
