Hilton Head, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team posted a 3-2 record during their Spring Break trip to South Carolina from March 11-14. The Seahawks dropped their first two matches of the week to Bridgewater (Va.) College and Methodist University before ending the trip with three straight wins.
First-year Anna Passaniti (White Hall, Md./Hereford) paced the Seahawks (6-7) during the week with a 4-1 record in singles action while Passaniti and senior captain Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) posted a 3-1 mark at No. 3 doubles.
Bridgewater 5, St. Mary's 4
For the second time in nine days, St. Mary's dropped a 5-4 decision to Bridgewater (5-0). This time, the match was decided by the result at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Katie Gordon (Winchester, Va.) and Brittany Wilson (Lynchburg, Va.) posted an 8-4 victory over sophomores Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) to lift the Eagles to the win.
Methodist 9, St. Mary's 0
The Seahawks then notched their fourth loss in a row with a 9-0 setback to Methodist University (5-2), who is ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region. St. Mary's closest match came in at No. 3 doubles as Bradcovich and Passaniti dropped a hard-fought 9-7 decision to sophomores Stephanie Hunter (Sanford, N.C.) and Emily Talley (San Angelo, Texas).
St. Mary's 5, Ohio Wesleyan 4
St. Mary's snapped its four-match skid by edging the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops (1-7) as Passaniti picked up a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles over sophomore Ellie Magner (Chevy Chase, Md.) to propel the Seahawks to their fourth win of the season.
St. Mary's 9, Marietta 0
The Seahawks had an easy go of it against Marietta College (0-5), blanking the Pioneers, 9-0. St. Mary's rolled to the shutout win following a clean sweep of doubles action to start the match.
St. Mary's 8, Olivet 1
The team ended the week on a high note as St. Mary's flew past the Olivet College Comets, 8-1. The Seahawks captured all singles matches and two doubles matches before Olivet avoided the shutout with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
St. Mary's will now return to Maryland to enjoy the rest of its Spring Break before hosting both Wesley College and Trinity Washington University on Tuesday, March 19. The Seahawks will open up Capital Athletic Conference action against Wesley at 3:30 pm before taking on Trinity at 6:00 pm.
