St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team fell Saturday afternoon in their home opener, dropping an 8-1 non-conference decision to Susquehanna University.
The Seahawks' (1-3) lone point of the match came at No. 2 doubles where sophomore Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) and first-year Emily Rost (Germantown, Md.) teamed up for a 9-8 (8-6) victory over senior Ellen Pulsinelle (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and sophomore Brielle Ferlauto (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville).
St. Mary's took Susquehanna (4-0) to three sets in four of the six singles matches before falling to the Crusaders.
Sophomore Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) claimed a 6-4 victory in the first set before falling 6-1, 6-3 in the final two sets to sophomore Shelby O'Riley (Ware, Mass./Quabbin Regional) at No. 1 singles.
Junior Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) picked up a 6-4 win in the first set before suffering a 6-4, 6-0 setback in the final two sets to Pulsinelle at No. 2 singles. E. Rost suffered a heartbreaking loss to sophomore Jessica Lage (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academcy), 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-10, at No. 5 singles.
First-year Anna Passaniti (White Hall, Md./Hereford) notched the Seahawks' final three-set loss as Passaniti lost the first set, 4-6, before tallying a 7-5 triumph in the second set. Sophomore Claire Smyth (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) claimed the win at No. 6 singles with a 6-4 win in the final set.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday, October 12 when St. Mary's welcomes Notre Dame of Maryland University to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 3:00 pm.
