Seahawk Women's Tennis Named an ITA All-Academic Team
Complete List of Women's Division III ITA All-Academic Teams
Skillman, N.J. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team status for the third year in a row, being one of 53 Division III programs to do so for the 2009-10 season. The Seahawks also had eight players named as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Joining the St. Mary's women as an ITA All-Academic Team from the Capital Athletic Conference was the University of Mary Washington.
The ITA All-Academic Team Award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2009 and spring 2010).
The Seahawks posted a 3.64 GPA during the 2009-10 season as St. Mary's finished this past season with a 10-11 (1-5 CAC) record, marking back-to-back 10-win campaigns for first time during head coach Derek Sabedra's tenure. SMCM advanced to the CAC semifinals as well for the third consecutive season, while senior Michelle Compton (Havre de Grace, Md./Tome) and first-year Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) garnered All-CAC second team honors at No. 1 doubles.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including first-year thorough senior year).
Bradcovich, Compton, senior Kate David (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg), sophomores Jackie Brady (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin), Aviva Brown (Pasadena, Md./Old Mill), Alli Crawford (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and first-year Emily Nielson (Seaford, Del./Seaford) all earned the right to be call ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Brady, Compton, David and Ramsey are all repeat selections as ITA Scholar-Athletes for the second year in a row.
