Wesley Nips St. Mary’s, 5-4
St. Mary’s City, Md. – The Wesley College women’s tennis team snapped a 15-match losing streak dating back to 2008 on Wednesday afternoon with a 5-4 victory over St. Mary’s College of Maryland as first-year Caitlin Grinstead’s (Dover, Del./Dover) win at No. 5 singles secured the triumph.
Grinstead battled first-year Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) for the win at No. 5 singles, needing to play a tiebreaker for each set. Grinstead notched a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5) triumph over Bradcovich to propel Wesley (1-2, 1-2 CAC) to the victory.
St. Mary’s (4-3, 0-1 CAC) claimed a 2-1 advantage after doubles actions with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights.
First-year Beth Handy (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) posted a win at No. 3 singles by walkover to give the Seahawks a 3-1 lead before Wesley captured the next three singles matches for its first lead of the match. Sophomore Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) won 6-1, 6-0 over sophomore Julia Wright (Manasquan, N.J./Wall) at No. 6 singles to knot the match at 4-all.
The Seahawks will return to action this weekend as St. Mary’s travels to the Eastern Shore to take on Salisbury University at 12:00 pm and then face University of Maryland-Eastern Shore at 4:00 pm.
