Seahawks Split Matches on Eastern Shore
Eastern Shore – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s tennis team began Saturday with an 8-1 loss to regionally-ranked Salisbury University before rebounding with a 7-2 victory over Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore later in the day.
In the loss to Salisbury (8-0, 2-0 CAC), who is ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region poll, sophomore Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) was the only Seahawk to notch a win against the Sea Gulls as Ramsey claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over sophomore Amy Worthington (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) at No. 6 singles.
The Seahawks (5-4, 0-2 CAC) started its match at UMES (0-11) with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and then swept singles flights No. 2 through No. 6.
First-year Beth Handy (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over sophomore Paula Vilas (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/University of APEC) at No. 2 singles.
Sophomore Katie Lackler (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory over senior LaToya Coltrane (Temple Hills, Md./Bladensburg) at No. 3 singles.
First-year Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) defeated Kira Chapman 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
First-year Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) recorded a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 5 singles over first-year Alisia Belt.
Ramsey registered her second victory of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win over junior Anna Katenta (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg).
St. Mary’s will be back in action tomorrow as the Seahawks take on Division II Bowie State University in Bowie, Md. at 1:00 pm.
