St. Marys Competes in Goucher Open

Towson, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team was led by senior Kate David (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) at the Goucher College Open this weekend, October 3-4, as David finished fourth in Flight 4 of singles competition.
David opened up competition in the No. 4 singles flight with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Stevenson's Rachel Mullet before dropping a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Penn State Behrend's Karen Hobaugh. David lost 6-1, 6-1 to Gwynedd-Mercy College's Chelsea Donde for her fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Katie Lackler (Ellicott
City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) notched a 1-2 mark in her flight as
Lackler opened up with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Moravian
College's Jami Fein.
Lackler notched a win in her second match as
Gwynedd-Mercy College's Davida Phillips forfeited
the match. In her final match, Lackler
dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Frostburg State University's
Elly Dannenfelser to finish seventh.

Freshman Chelsea Bradcovich
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) suffered her first setback of her
rookie campaign, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Frostburg State's
Megan Martin. Bradcovich
then lost 6-2, 6-0 to Richard Stockton College's Kelli
Williams before picking up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Stevenson
University's Julie Strong for seventh place.

Sophomore Alli Crawford
(Frederick, Md./Urbana) went 1-2 in her flight as
Crawford lost 6-1, 6-0 to Richard Stockton's
Stephanie Krupa and lost a heartbreaking 1-6, 7-6
(7-2), 1-0 (10-8) to Goucher's Addie
Maxwell. Crawford ended the Open
with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Stevenson's Sam Baugher
for seventh place.
Doubles Flight
1
The tandem of freshmen Beth Handy
(Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) and Marie Rau (Ellicott
City, Md./Howard) took seventh in doubles action with a 1-2
record. The Seahawks fell 6-4, 6-3 to the mix-match duo of
Moravian's Elizabeth Endy and Goucher's
Marina Sterngold then dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision
to Frostburg State's duo of Caroline Shedd and
Vicky Stafford. Handy/Rau
rebounded with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Stevenson's Michelle
Huber and Izzy Kaiser.
Doubles Flight

Sophomores Aviva Brown (Pasadena,
Md./Old Mill) and Jackie Brady (Thurmont,
Md./Catoctin) placed seventh as well in doubles play with a 6-4,
6-1 loss to Gwynedd-Mercy's Chelsea Jones and
Sarah Tefft and a 7-5, 6-1 setback at the hands of
Penn State Behrend's Elissa Swartz and
Megan Flinchbaugh.
Brown/Brady ended with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over
Goucher's Ilana Gross and Vickey
Casey.
The Seahawks will return to action on Friday, October 9, traveling to Winchester, Va. to take on Shenandoah University at 3:30 pm.
