St. Mary’s Shuts Out Chowan for Season-Opening Win

Virginia Beach, Va. - The freshmen women were impressive in their debut as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team posted a 9-0 blanking over Division II Chowan College Friday afternoon.

The win helps the Seahawks kick off the 2009-10 campaign with a 1-0 mark, while Chowan drops to 0-1 on the young season.

Freshman Beth Handy (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 singles flight over Brittney Moser.  Fellow classmate Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) also did not drop a single game as Bradcovich tallied a straight set win over Brittany Allen at No. 5 singles.

Rounding out the freshman debuts was Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) as Rau recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Adreka Bumbrey.

As a team, St. Mary's only gave up eight games in singles play, while the tandem of sophomores Jackie Brady (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Alli Crawford (Frederick, Md./Urbana) blanked Allen and Moser in No. 3 doubles action.

The Seahawks will return to action tomorrow as St. Mary's faces Virginia Wesleyan College at 9:00 am.
