Lancaster, Pa. – Junior captain Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) captured two events during the first day of action at the two-day Franklin & Marshall College Invitational Saturday as the Seahawks are fifth through 12 events with 315 points.
Heyde claimed first-place honors in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.81, just missing an NCAA 'B' cut by 14-hundredths of a second. First-year Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford) finished sixth (2:14.29) in the event while junior Daisy Smith (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) came in 15th (2:18.89).
Heyde's next win came in the 400 IM as she touched the wall first in 4:31.79, leading a group of six Seahawks in the event. First-year Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) placed fourth in 4:42.62 while Raab was sixth (4:44.52) and Smith 12th in 4:50.26. Senior captain Katelyn Grue (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales) took 14th in 4:52.15 while sophomore Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) finished on Grue's heels for 15th (4:52.84).
The Seahawks notched a fourth-place finish in the 800 free relay in 8:11.27 behind the efforts of Heyde, Kohles, Raab, and first-year Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial). St. Mary's added a fifth-place finish in the 400 medley relay in 4:07.21 as first-year Hannah Hafey (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley), junior Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana), Heyde and Abernathy swam on the relay.
Kohles finished sixth in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.30 while O'Connor came in 14th in 5:24.30. Abernathy represented the Seahawks in the 100 butterfly with a seventh-place finish in 1:01.27 while senior captain Katie Serfling (Frederick, Md./Urbana) took eighth in 1:01.75 and senior Chris DiMenna (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was 11th in 1:03.16.
Heyde, Gulliver, sophomore Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Abernathy led the Seahawks to a seventh-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:43.82. Senior Mandy Pazouki (Silver Spring, Md./JFK) took an eighth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.53 while Gulliver finished 13th (1:11.19) and D'Ambrosio was 14th (1:11.34).
Hafey notched a ninth-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.39 while being part of the ninth-place 200 medley relay team as she joined forces with Gulliver, Serfling, and D'Ambrosio to finish the event in 1:55.78.
St. Mary's will wrap up action at the F&M Invitational tomorrow as the final session starts at 10:00 am with the 200 backstroke.
