Knoxville, Tenn. – The NCAA Division III Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving Championships got underway Wednesday and St. Mary's College of Maryland sophomore swimmer Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) knocked out her first of three events.

Heyde began her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA championships by swimming in the 200 individual medley event.  She entered this morning's preliminaries seeded 23rd in the event.  Heyde finished the morning trials with a 27th-place finish in 2:08.60.

This morning's placement was a four-spot improvement from last year's 31st-place finish in the same event.

The national championships are being held at the world-class Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville until March 26.

The two events left for Heyde are the 400 individual medley and the 200 butterfly.  She enters NCAA competition seeded 14th in the 400 IM (4:28.94) and 19th in the 200 fly (2:05.52).

Heyde continues action Thursday morning with the 400 IM followed by the 200 fly on Friday.  Last season, she registered a 25th-place finish in the 400 IM and a 27th-place finish in the 200 fly.

Event trials begin at 10:00 am each day with finals beginning at 6:00 pm.  Only the top 16 finishers in the morning trials of each event advance to the finals.
