St. Mary's Women's Swimming Second on Opening Day of Conference Championship Meet

Complete Day One Results

St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) notched an NCAA provisional time as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team finished second with 167 points on the first day of the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Swimming Championships on Friday.

Heyde captured the 200 individual medley for the second year in a row with an NCAA 'B' cut of 2:08.59, distancing herself from the second-place finisher by nearly three seconds.

Heyde also helped the Seahawks to a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay for the second consecutive season, leading off with the backstroke.  Joining her on the relay were senior Rosa Trembour (Takoma Park, Md./Albert Einstein), senior captain Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and first-year Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase).

Sokolove picked up her first 200 IM all-conference award as she finished third with a time of 2:13.06.  As a first-year, Sokolove had finished seventh in the event.

The foursome of sophomore Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana), senior Arielle Webster (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford), first-year Hattie Schiavone (Winchester, Va./John Handley), and D'Ambrosio placed third in the 200 free relay in 1:44.01, edging Salisbury University by 13 hundredths of a second.  This marked Webster's fourth straight all-conference honor in the event.

The Seahawks boasted three consolation final winners as well as first-year Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) came in ninth in the 500 freestyle (5:27.20) while Trembour was ninth in the 200 IM (2:17.18).  Gulliver finished ninth in the 50 freestyle (25.92).

Other CAC championship meet highlights included Marymount University's junior Anna Macedonia (Annandale, Va./Bishop O'Connell) claiming gold in the 50 freestyle with an NCAA provisional time of 23.99.  Last season, Macedonia finished second in the event to this year's second-place finisher, University of Mary Washington's senior Adriana Lesiuk (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth).  Lesiuk holds the CAC championship meet record in the event, having set it last year.

University of Mary Washington, who is in search of its 21st consecutive conference title, leads the seven-team field with 279 points, claiming three of the five events.
