No. 21 Johns Hopkins Outlasts Seahawks

Baltimore, Md. - Swimming against their second ranked opponent in a week, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team fell short of their quest to get back in the win column Friday night, dropping a 108-91 non-conference decision to No. 21 Johns Hopkins University.

Johns Hopkins (2-6) won six of the first eight events before swimming exhibitions while freshman Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) paced the Seahawks (6-3) with a pair of individual first-place finishes.

Heyde touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley in 2:13.24 while claiming first in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.46.

Senior Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis) notched a first-place finish as well as Hotchko captured the 100 butterfly in 59.96 while taking second in the 50 freestyle in 26.15.

Joining Heyde and Hotchko in leading St. Mary's 200 medley relay team to a third-place finish (1:57.77) were captains Monika Disque (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase).

Freshman Melanie Bloch (Bethesda, Md./French International) picked up two third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:04.87) and the 100 freestyle (56.85).

Sophomore Katelyn Grue (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) was the Seahawks' top finisher in the 1000 freestyle, coming in fourth in 11:44.48, while Disque finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.77.

The Seahawks will look to snap their two-meet losing skid tomorrow (January 23) as St. Mary's hosts Salisbury University in the Seahawks' regular-season finale at 1:00 pm.
