No. 4 Mary Washington Swims Past St. Mary’s

St. Mary's City, Md. - In their first dual meet action since November 21, 2009, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team only picked up two first-place finishes, falling 132-73 to fourth-ranked University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.  The loss was the first for the Seahawks in league meets.

Mary Washington (6-1, 5-0 CAC) was paced in the win by junior Adriana Lesiuk (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth) who tallied two individual first-place finishes and anchored the winning the 400 medley relay.

Freshman Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) was the Seahawks' only multiple winner as Heyde notched two individual first-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle and 200 butterfly events.  Heyde claimed the win in the 1000 free in 10:53.91 while swimming a 2:15.57 to capture the 200 fly.

Senior Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis) finished second in both of her individual events as Hotchko posted a time of 55.09 in the 100 freestyle and 2:03.55 in the 200 freestyle.

In her first meet of the season after returning from studying abroad in the fall, sophomore Amanda Pazouki (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy), the school record holder in the 200 breaststroke, placed second in the event in 2:35.28.

The Seahawks took second in the 400 medley relay in 4:11.96 behind the efforts of captains Monika Disque (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), Hotchko and freshman  Melanie Bloch (Bethesda, Md./French International).

The 400 free relay was also second in 3:55.05 as Heyde, freshman Maddie Casey (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton), freshman Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana), and Bloch teamed up for the event.

Bloch and Disque also recorded second-place finishes for St. Mary's as Bloch was second in the 50 freestyle (26.26) while Disque swam the second-fastest time in the 200 backstroke (2:22.01).

The Seahawks will return to action next Friday, January 22 as St. Mary's travels to Baltimore to take on No. 21 Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference dual meet at 4:00 pm.
