Seahawks Stay Undefeated in Conference Action; Heyde Picks Up Second School Mark
St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team rebounded from last week's loss at Washington (Md.) College with a 129-76 victory over York (Pa.) College to remain unblemished in Capital Athletic Conference action as six Seahawks (6-1, 3-0 CAC) helped the home team capture eight events.
Freshman Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) registered her second school record as well as her second NCAA 'B' cut as Heyde won the 400 individual medley with a record-setting and NCAA provisional time of 4:33.71. The new record knocked off the old mark of 4:38.74 set by Brie McDowell '09 on November 14, 2008. Heyde also touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle in 5:31.03.
St. Mary's claimed at least the top two spots in five events, including sweeping the 50 freestyle, the 400 IM and the 100 butterfly.
Senior Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis) nabbed two individual wins as well as leading off the winning 200 free relay. Hotchko touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle in 25.61 while capturing the 100 butterfly in 59.59.
Junior captain Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.03 while taking second in the 400 individual medley (4:55.40) and swimming the breaststroke leg on the second-place 200 medley relay.
Freshman Maddie Casey (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) posted a winning time of 11:24.17 in the 1000 freestyle while swimming the second leg of the winning 200 free relay as the Seahawks captured the relay event in 1:43.87. Casey also claimed fourth in the 100 freestyle in 59.36.
Freshman Melanie Bloch (Bethesda, Md./French International) took home the gold in the 100 freestyle in 57.50 while anchoring the winning 200 free relay. Bloch finished second in the 50 free (25.63).
Freshman Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana) was the third leg of the winning 200 free relay while finishing third in the 50 freestyle (26.82), fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.26) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (59.39).
The Seahawks will be back in the pool in two weeks as St. Mary's will compete at the annual Franklin & Marshall College Invitational on December 5-6 in Lancaster, Pa.
