Seahawk Women Remain Undefeated
St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) had three individual first-place finishes in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team to a pair of wins over Gallaudet University and Goucher College on Saturday afternoon.
With today's two wins, the Seahawks (5-0, 2-0 CAC) remain undefeated on the 2009-10 season. St. Mary's posted a 168-37 victory over Gallaudet (0-4, 0-3 CAC) and a 158-46 triumph over Goucher (1-3) while Goucher notched a 105-95 win over Gallaudet.
Heyde finished first in the 50 freestyle in 25.58 then touched the wall first in the 100 free in 56.44. She followed that up with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.48. Heyde led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breast as freshman Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana) was second in 1:13.89 and freshman Daisy Smith (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) placed third in 1:17.43.
Freshman Maddie Casey (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) picked up two individual wins as Casey captured the 1000 freestyle in 11:30.07 and the 500 free in 5:46.96. She also swam the third leg of the first-place 200 free relay.
Joining Casey on the first-place 200 free relay was freshman Melanie Bloch (Bethesda, Md./French International), freshman Joanna Purich (Silver Spring, Md./Blake), and Gulliver as the Seahawks finished first in 1:46.39.
Purich nabbed a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke as she led a 1-2-3 finish in the event. She came in first in 1:08.20 followed by senior Anna Chiplis (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) in second in 1:09.90 and freshman Molly MacDonald (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) in third in 1:14.68.
Senior Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis) captured the 100 butterfly in 1:00.50 while swimming anchor on the 200 medley relay. Senior captain Monika Disque (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), senior Laura VanBlargan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), and Chiplis joined Hotchko on the first-place 200 medley relay as the Seahawks won in 2:02.78.
Sophomore Katelyn Grue (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales) won the 200 individual medley in 2:22.34 while sophomore Katie Serfling (Frederick, Md./Urbana) was in close pursuit, finishing second in 2:22.56.
Bloch was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.16 while junior captain Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) came in third in 2:06.35.
The Seahawks will be back in the pool next Saturday, November 14 when St. Mary's travels to Washington (Md.) College in Chestertown for a non-conference dual meet at 1:00 pm.
