St. Mary’s Women’s Swimming Honored for Good Grades

Baltimore, Md. - The president of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), George Kennedy, released today the 2009 individual and team scholar All-American lists and the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming team was represented on both lists.

With a 3.39 GPA, St. Mary's was one of 82 Division III women's teams named as a 2009 CSCAA Team Scholar All-American.  The Seahawks were one of only two teams to represent the Capital Athletic Conference as Salisbury University made the list with a 3.28.

Since head coach Andre Barbins' arrival in 1998, the Seahawk women's team has made 12 consecutive appearances as a CSCAA Team Scholar All-American.

For teams to be eligible, the team must have a GPA of 3.0 or better (or the equivalent converted) on a 4.00 scale for the semester.

Webster McDowell Individually, Brie McDowell (Wilton, Conn./Hatboro-Horsham [Pa.]) was cited as a 2009 CSCAA Scholar All-American, while Eleanor Koerner (North Potomac, Md./T.S. Wootton) and rising juniors Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Arielle Webster (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) were named Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans.  

To be considered as a Scholar All-American, a student-athlete must meet one of the following criteria's to be eligible: a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better (or the equivalent converted) on a 4.00 scale, a semester/quarter GPA of 3.5 or better (or the equivalent converted) on a 4.00 scale, or a school year GPA of 3.5 or better (or the equivalent converted) on a 4.00 scale as well as qualify to compete in the NCAA Championships.  McDowell competed at this year's NCAA championships, earning three All-America honors with three Top 10 finishes, including a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke.

Sokolove Koerner To be considered as an honorable mention Scholar All-American, a student-athlete must meet one of the following criteria's to be eligible: a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better (or the equivalent converted) on a 4.00 scale, a semester/quarter GPA of 3.5 or better (or the equivalent converted) on a 4.00 scale, or a school year GPA of 3.5 or better (or the equivalent converted) on a 4.00 scale as well as achieve an NCAA ‘B' time standard.  Koerner did so with an NCAA ‘B' cut in the 50 free, the 200 and 400 free relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays.  Sokolove accomplished her ‘B' cuts in the 200 and 400 medley relays, while Webster posted an NCAA ‘B' cut in the 200 free relay.
