Seahawk Women's Soccer Locks Up No. 6 Seed in CAC Tournament

St. Mary's City, Md. – For the second time this season, senior captain Katie Flores (Towson, Md./Towson) collected a career-best 11 saves as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team dropped their regular-season finale Wednesday afternoon. St. Mary's (7-10-1, 2-4-1 CAC) fell 4-1 to No. 15 Christopher Newport University (14-1-0, 7-0-0 CAC), earning the sixth seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.

As the No. 6 seed, the Seahawks will face third-seeded York College of Pennsylvania this Saturday, October 27 in York, Pa. Game time has not been determined yet. St. Mary's claimed a 2-1 win over York on the road on October 17 behind a goal and an assist from senior forward Jenna Pastel (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) while Flores came up with 10 stops.

How It Happened

  • The St. Mary's defense in the first half was solid, holding the nationally-ranked Captains to just one goal as Flores notched seven of her career-best 11 saves over the first 45 minutes.
  • Gabby Gillis gave CNU an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute off an assist from Abby Harrigan.
  • The Seahawks started the second stanza strong, making good on their lone shot of the half.
  • Sophomore forward Alex Moody (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) drew St. Mary's even with the Captains at 46:50 as she finished off a pass from Pastel for her team-leading fifth goal.
  • Christopher Newport quickly responded as Carson Pokorny put one past Flores with the aid of Maddie Cochran at 48:04.
  • CNU tacked on two more in an eight-minute span as Riley Cook, the conference's leading scorer, and Kristina Toms both scored in the 72nd and 80th minute, respectively.
  • CNU outshot the Seahawks, 36-2, and owned a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

  • Goalkeeper: Flores (11 saves, 4 goals allowed, 90:00)

For Christopher Newport

  • Scorers: Gillis (1 goal); Pokorny (1 goal); Cook (1 goal); Toms (1 goal); Harrigan (2 assists); Cochran (1 assist); Borris (1 assist)
  • Goalkeeper: Hailey Eiser (1 save, 1 goal allowed, 90:00)

Notes

  • CNU improves to 9-2 in the series, which began in 2007. This is the Captains' sixth consecutive win over St. Mary's.
