Krech Returns Home as Women's Soccer Head Coach

St. Mary's City, Md. – Scott Devine, St. Mary's College of Maryland director of athletics & recreation, is proud to announce Tuesday afternoon the hiring of Peter Krech '09 as the next Seahawk women's soccer coach. Devine stated, "It is with great pleasure that we welcome Peter Krech back to campus to assume the head coaching duties of our women's soccer program."

A young and enthusiastic individual, Krech becomes the fifth coach in the program's 29-year history and brings a solid coaching career developed at the collegiate and club levels. "In his young coaching career, Peter has done everything possible to prepare himself for an opportunity like this," continued Devine. "… he has been coaching high level athletes over the last several years at both D-I UMBC and Maryland United FC, which is widely regarded as one of the top clubs in the state of Maryland."

Assistant Athletic Director Jim Cranmer, who served as the chair of the search committee, added, "First, I would like to thank the other members of the search committee and the players that were able to take part in the process. With over 120 qualified candidates, Peter's coaching experience, as well as his previous recruiting experience at St. Mary's College helped to set him apart from the other highly qualified candidates."

Krech comes back to St. Mary's following two seasons with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) women's soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. He became a full-fledged assistant at the conclusion of the 2013 season. Working primarily as a goalkeeper coach, Krech was part of the 2013 America East Conference Coaching Staff of the Year that led the Retrievers to the 2013 America East regular-season and tournament championship titles as well as the program's first-ever NCAA appearance.

"I would like to thank Scott Devine and the entire search committee for the opportunity to come back to St. Mary's College of Maryland as the next head women's soccer coach," expressed Krech. "I am very proud, humbled, and excited to be coming back to coach at my alma mater and I look forward to working with the student-athletes to achieve success both on and off the soccer field.

I would also like to thank the coaches and players at UMBC for everything they have done for me over the past few years, and I look forward to starting the next chapter of my life back at St. Mary's. Go Seahawks!"

Prior to UMBC, Krech spent three seasons as the assistant men's coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Mary's. His responsibilities included organizing and working with film, being involved in training plans and game strategies, as well as identifying potential student-athletes, coordinating their visits, paperwork and tours.

Krech gained head coaching experience with Maryland United FC (formerly Freestate Soccer Alliance), where he has been on staff since 2009 and most recently served as the head coach for the Girls U12 Red and the Girls U18 Red teams. He also has experience with the Olympic Development Program (ODP), where he coached the '95 boys' team for two seasons, leading them to the regional finals in 2011. Prior to taking over the boys' team in 2011, Krech served as an assistant with the '96 girls in 2010 and the '95 girls in 2009.

The Hollywood, Maryland native graduated from St. Mary's in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in sports coaching and management. Krech also holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Level I Goalkeeping Diploma.

With the 2014 season just weeks away, Devine stated, "Coach Krech will hit the ground running on the recruiting front with his strong ties and relationships in Maryland, along with his familiarity with St. Mary's College. I believe Peter will bring the right combination of enthusiasm, soccer knowledge, and calm leadership to our women's soccer program."
