St. Mary's Women's Soccer Picks up NSCAA Ethics/Sportsmanship Award

Kansas City, Kans. – For the third consecutive season, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team has garnered the NSCAA Team Ethics/Sportsmanship Silver Award for exhibiting fair play, sporting behavior, and adherence to the laws of the game as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards shown by referees throughout the 2011 season.

St. Mary's is one of 82 teams that were honored for its ethical play this season as announced by NSCAA Ethics Committee Chair, Dr. Brian Crossman.  Sixth-year head coach Brianne Weaver will be presented with the award on Thursday, January 12 at the College Coaches Awards Reception as part of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Annual Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

The Seahawks were one of only two Capital Athletic Conference member institutions – men or women – to be honored by the NSCAA Ethics Committee as Wesley College, under direction of Edward Muntz, earned the Silver Award as well.

The Silver Award is awarded to teams with a maximum of five yellow cards and no red cards.  St. Mary's only received three cautions this season.

As the sixth seed in the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament, the Seahawks (6-7-3, 2-4-2 CAC) advanced all the way to the CAC title game after eliminating third-seeded Frostburg State University on penalty kicks in the first round and knocking off the defending CAC champion, second-seeded Stevenson University, 2-1, in the semifinals.  The team's quest for the program's second league crown ended in a 1-0 overtime loss to top-seeded Salisbury University.
