Wirtz Notches First Career Athlete of the Month Honor

St. Mary's City, Md. – Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team was a unanimous selection for October Athlete of the Month by the Department of Athletics & Recreation after leading the Seahawks to their third appearance in the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament title game.

The 5-10 sophomore goalkeeper posted a 1.52 goals against average and 0.802 save percentage as well as two shutouts over 10 games in October as the Seahawks tallied a 2-5-3 (1-3-2 CAC) record.

In earning her second CAC Defensive Player of the Week award on October 31, Wirtz recorded 14 saves on 33 shots faced to help St. Mary's notch the sixth seed in the CAC Tournament and then eliminate No. 3 seed Frostburg State University, posting an 0.82 GAA as well as 0.875 save percentage in two games.

She registered five saves in a 2-2 draw at Marymount (Va.) University on October 26 that pinned down the sixth seed for the Seahawks.  St. Mary's then knocked off Frostburg State in first round action on October 30 as Wirtz denied FSU nine times in 110 minutes, including a Bobcat shot with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, three consecutive shots in a 1:27-minute span in the first extra period, and another FSU shot with 39 seconds left in the second OT stanza, to preserve the scoreless draw and force a penalty kick shootout.

Wirtz followed up her player of the week efforts with seven stops as the Seahawks upset the defending CAC champion, No. 2 seed Stevenson University, 2-1, in the CAC semifinals on November 2.

She wrapped up the month with a career-best 16 saves in the team's heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss at top-seeded Salisbury University in the CAC title game.

Wirtz finished the 2011 campaign with a 6-7-3 record in goal, recording six shutouts for a 1.27 GAA and 0.837 save percentage.
