St. Mary's Women's Soccer, Marymount Battle to 2-2 Draw
Washington, D.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Marymount (Va.) University in Capital Athletic Conference action on a soggy Wednesday afternoon. The draw leaves the Seahawks as the sixth seed in the 2011 CAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament which begins October 30.
As the sixth seed, St. Mary's (5-6-2, 2-4-2 CAC) will travel to No. 3 seed Frostburg State University on Sunday for first round action. Frostburg State (14-2-1) posted a come-from-behind 4-2 win over the Seahawks on October 1.
The Seahawks struck first at 13:19 as junior forward Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) shot from the top of the box and the ball went off the hands of junior goalkeeper Gaby Prellezo (Coral Gables, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes).
Marymount (5-10-1, 0-7-1 CAC) evened up the game at 39:33 when junior forward Katie Hamelin (Chateaugay, N.Y./Chateaugay Central) put back senior midfielder Brianna Notarangelo's (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) rebound.
First-year midfielder Liz Mosher (Bethesda, Md./The Madeira School) returned the one-goal lead to the Seahawks two minutes before halftime as Mosher collected a pass from senior forward Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional) in front of the net and then beat Prellezo far post.
The Saints tied the contest once again in the 75th minute as first-year defender Danni Bankins (Gaithersburg, Md./Great Seneca) finished off fellow classmate Hannah Boswell's (Frederick, Md./Frederick) corner kick.
The 2-2 score held through a pair of 10-minute extra periods. St. Mary's dominated overtime, posting a 4-1 shot advantage as well as earning four corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) finished the day with five saves on eight shots faced.
