Seahawk Women's Soccer Uses Second Half Surge for Season-Opening Win
Arnold, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Carly Harmon (Davisburg, Mich./Holly) dished two assists in helping the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer squad kick off the 2010 campaign with a 3-0 shutout of Anne Arundel Community College Wednesday night.
St. Mary's, who is looking to get back to its 2008 championship form, struck first in the first half as sophomore midfielder Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) completed a feed from sophomore forward Kim LaBarge (Gambrills, Md./South River). The 1-0 score would hold true through halftime as the Anne Arundel (1-1-1) defense clamped down.
The Seahawks finally broke through again at 79:40 when Harmon fed first-year midfielder Ellie Meiser (Solomons, Md./Patuxent) for the 2-0 lead. Nearly two minutes later, LaBarge found the back of the net as Harmon assisted on the play.
St. Mary's three first-year goalies, Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford), Shelby Perkins (Forest Hill, Md./Notre Dame Prep), and Allison Griffin (Dayton, Md./River Hill), combined for the shutout with Wirtz picking up the lone save.
