Sitz, Seahawks Stymie Hood

St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman forward Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) scored twice as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team rebounded from Saturday's loss with a 4-0 shutout of Hood College in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional) netted the would-be game-winner at 11:50 as McGovern headed in the ball just inside the near post following a corner kick by freshman midfielder Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana).  Sitz tallied her first tally of the contest in the 39th minute as she dribbled past her defender and beat junior goalkeeper Rachelle Buhrman (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) to her left.

The Seahawks (2-1, 1-0 CAC) carried their 2-0 lead into halftime.

Sitz notched the first goal of the second half as she fired in a shot from the right side that curved into the top left corner at 52:02.  Freshman midfielder Kim LaBarge (Gambrills, Md./South River) sealed the win as LaBarge booted it diagonally from about 25 yards and nailed the top shelf at 87:17.

The St. Mary's offense was relentless the entire game, outshooting the Blazers (2-2, 1-2 CAC) 26-3.  The home team was also awarded seven corner kicks, while Hood had three.

Sophomore Lacey Johnson (Leonardtown, Md./Patuxent) started in goal for SMCM, making just one save in 66 minutes, while freshman Grace Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) finished out the game for the Seahawks with one stop.

Buhrman racked up eight saves and three goals against in 66 minutes, while sophomore Kirsten Cacciola (Cavetown, Md./Smithsburg) gave up one goal and had one save in the final 24 minutes.

St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, September 12 when the Seahawks host the defending national champion, No. 1 Messiah College, in non-conference play at 3:00.

Hood's next opponent will be SUNY Purchase at home this Saturday at 3:30.
