Christopher Newport Sneaks by St. Marys
Newport News, Va. - Senior defender Jenn Campbell (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) found the back of the net twice in leading Christopher Newport University to a 2-1 non-conference victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Friday night.
St. Mary's (4-6) struck first as freshman midfielder Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) completed a feed from senior midfielder Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) for Eskay's second goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage at 30:08.
Campbell knotted the match at 1-1 as she converted a pass from sophomore defender Shelby Walters (San Antonio, Texas/W.T. Woodson [Va.]) at 38:11. The contest remained tied at halftime.
Campbell quickly gave the Captains (4-6-1) a 2-1 lead as she scored just 40 seconds into the start of the second half. Freshman Tiffany Van Decker (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) assisted on the play.
Christopher Newport doubled up on shots as the Captains took 14 to the Seahawks' seven. CNU dominated corner kicks as well, 7-2.
Senior goalkeeper Dineen Sampson (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) notched three saves in the win, while freshman goalkeeper Grace Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) tallied four stops for the visitors.
The Seahawks will return to action this coming Monday, October 5 as St. Mary's will travel to Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet University in Capital Athletic Conference action under the lights at 7:00 pm.
