St. Mary’s One of Seven Teams to Earn Prestigious Gold Award

Kansas City, Kans. - This past weekend, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced the programs which received either the Gold, Silver or Bronze version of the Team Ethics Award, recognizing those squads that exhibited fair play, sporting behavior, and adherence to the laws of the game as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.

The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team picked up the NSCAA Team Ethics Gold Award for the second consecutive season.  St. Mary's was one of seven programs (both men's and women's) in the entire nation across all three NCAA divisions to receive the Gold Award for receiving no cards throughout the season.  The other six programs to join St. Mary's on the list were Division III Grove City College (11-8-2), Hope College (13-6), Muskingum College (7-9-2), Neumann College (4-15-1), and Suffolk University (5-9) and NAIA Bethel College (6-9-1).

The Seahawks were the only team to represent the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) on any of the three award lists.

A total of 66 teams met the requirements for the award this year, up 11 percent from 2007.  Forty-three teams claimed the Silver Award (maximum of five yellow cards and no red cards), while 10 of those 43 squads received only one yellow card.  The Bronze Award (maximum of 10 yellow cards and no red cards) went to 16 programs.

The Seahawks' 2008 campaign was one of historical firsts as St. Mary's captured the program's first-ever CAC championship and earned the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.  In addition, St. Mary's earned the program's first-ever national ranking when the Seahawks were No. 25 on October 7 and No. 24 on October 14.  The Seahawks also matched the program's high in All-CAC selections with seven.

St. Mary's posted an overall record of 12-3-3, including a 6-1-1 mark in conference play. The Seahawks spent the season's first 10 games unbeaten, posting a 7-0-3 log during that span.
