Carrier, Esparza Earn All-Region Honors

Kansas City, Kans. - Senior Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and junior Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) were both recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as each received a spot on the NSCAA/adidas® Division III All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team as announced by the NSCAA today.

Carrier and Esparza were two of four players to represent the Capital Athletic Conference on the all-region teams.  This is the first all-region selection for both Seahawks.

The 2008 CAC Player-of-the-Year, Carrier is a two-time All-CAC First Team (2006, 2008) pick after leading the Seahawks this season with 29 points in 12 games played on a team-high 13 goals and three assists.  The 5-5 forward, who suffered a season-ending knee injury on October 15 versus Virginia Wesleyan College, also led the conference with 2.42 points per game and 1.08 goals per game.  A 2006 All-CAC First Team honoree, she tallied a career-high four goals and eight points in a 4-0 win at Hood College.  Carrier was tied for second in the CAC with a team-leading three game-winning goals, while also being second in points and goals and sixth in assists per game with 0.25.

Carrier finished her four-year career with 56 points on 24 goals and eight assists in 61 games played with 34 starts.  She also notched six game-winning goals.

A three-time All-CAC First Team selection, Esparza was the second-leading scorer for St. Mary's with 27 points on 11 goals and a team-best five assists.  In the CAC, the 5-7 midfielder ranked tied for second in game-winning goals (3), third in points per game (1.59), tied for fourth in goals, fourth in goals per game (0.65), tied for fifth in assists, fifth in assists per game (0.29), and sixth in points.  She registered career-bests of three goals and seven points in a 6-1 win at Wesley College.  Esparza recorded two hat tricks this season as she also tallied three goals in a victory over Gallaudet University.

The Seahawks' 2008 campaign was one of historical firsts as St. Mary's captured the program's first-ever CAC championship and earned the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.  In addition, St. Mary's earned the program's first-ever national ranking when the Seahawks were No. 25 on October 7 and No. 24 on October 14.  The Seahawks also matched the program's high in All-CAC selections with seven.

St. Mary's posted an overall record of 12-3-3, including a 6-1-1 mark in conference play. The Seahawks spent the season's first 10 games unbeaten, posting a 7-0-3 log during that span.
