St. Mary's City, Md. - In the battle of unbeatens, both squads remained as such as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team played No. 9 Johns Hopkins University to a 2-2 tie Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Seahawks (4-0-2) struck first at 11:17 as senior defender Katie Klotz (Bowie, Md./Good Counsel) volleyed in a free kick from 25 yards out into the box where freshman midfielder Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip) headed in the ball for her third goal of the season.

St. Mary's goal in the 12th minute snapped a 478:37 scoreless streak for junior Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick), dating back to last year's NCAA First Round 2-0 loss to Virginia Wesleyan College.

Johns Hopkins (4-0-2), who is also ranked third in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region, responded over six minutes later when senior Molly Steele (Daleville, Va./North Cross) sent in a cross from the right side to junior forward Caitlin Moore (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) who one-timed a shot that hit underneath the crossbar and then fell in for the first equalizer of the contest.

Following a flurry of shots which saw a Hopkins defender denying a shot followed by Guszkowski stopping a point blank shot before junior midfielder Brianne Carroll (Long Island, N.Y./Ward Melville) finally the ball in the back of the net to put the Hawks back on top, 2-1, at 35:14.

SMCM, who earned the No. 10 spot on today's regional poll, held on to the 2-1 margin until the 61st minute when a cross from the right side by sophomore midfielder Allie Zazzali (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) just curved inside the far post to knot the match back up.

The Blue Jays outshot St. Mary's, 7-3, in the two 10-minute overtime periods but three saves by senior Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) kept JHU at bay.

Johns Hopkins held the advantage in both shots (24-20) and corner kicks (8-4).

Oben registered a season-best nine stops, while Guszkowski collected 10 saves.

The Seahawks will return to action in a week when St. Mary's hosts Gallaudet University in a Capital Athletic Conference match-up at 4:30 in Seahawk Stadium.
