Seahawks Record Third Shutout Victory
Boyds, Md. - Senior forward Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) had a career day for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team as Carrier netted all four goals in the Seahawks' 4-0 shutout of Hood College Tuesday afternoon in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for SMCM.
All three of St. Mary's wins this season have been shutout as the Seahawks now stand at 3-0-1 (1-0 CAC) for the young 2008 campaign.
Carrier received help from senior midfielder Katrina Borden (Hartfield, Va./Wakefield) on her first tally of the day, giving SMCM a 1-0 lead just 2:55 into the start of the contest.
Carrier then next scored a pair in less than eight minutes to put St. Mary's up 3-0 at 29:37. She broke away and then beat a Blazer defender to find the back of the net at 21:51. To complete the hat trick, Carrier beat sophomore Rachelle Buhrman (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) to the right for the 3-0 halftime Seahawk lead.
After six minutes had transpired in the second half, Carrier one-timed a pass from Borden and this time beat Buhrman on the left for the final score of the afternoon.
The Seahawks rattled off 21 shots to Hood's three, while St. Mary's was awarded seven corner kicks and the Blazers (1-4, 1-2 CAC) none.
Senior Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) and sophomore Elizabeth Benge (Walter Johnson) combined for SMCM's third shutout. Oben made one save in 65 minutes of play while Benge had no need to make any in the final 25 of the match.
Buhrman went on to finish the afternoon with six saves and four goals against in 73 minutes, while freshman Kirsten Cacciola (Cavetown, Md./Middletown) made four stops in the final 17 minutes.
St. Mary's will next face Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa. this Saturday, September 13 at 4:30 in non-conference action. Elizabethtown (2-1-1) is currently ranked seventh in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region poll.
