St. Mary’s Shuts Out Gallaudet

St. Mary's City, Md. - Six different players for St. Mary's College of Maryland scored en route to a 10-0 blanking of Gallaudet University in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) finished the afternoon with career-highs of three goals and six points, while senior forward Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) added five points on two goals and an assist.
The Seahawks (5-0-2, 2-0 CAC) netted all 10 goals in the first half, including Carrier's pair in a 43-second span to start the contest, as St. Mary's extended its unbeaten streak to seven.
Esparza notched a natural hat trick in a 3:40 span to increase St. Mary's lead to 6-0 at 22:07. Carrier assisted on Esparza's first goal, while Esparza finished off a cross from senior midfielder Taylor Cervenka (Damascus, Md./Damascus) for her third tally.
Senior midfielder Katrina Borden (Hartfield, Va./Wakefield) tallied career-highs of two goals and four points, while Cervenka chipped in a goal and an assist.
Freshman midfielder Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip) and junior forward Kaitlin Boswell (Baltimore, Md./Friends) each scored once for the Seahawks who are ranked seventh in this week's NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region poll - a three-spot jump from last week's No. 10 position.
St. Mary's, who jumped three spots to No. 7 in this week's NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region poll, outshot the Bison (0-8, 0-4 CAC), 31-0, and posted a 5-0 margin in corner kicks.
Sophomore Elizabeth Benge (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) picked up her first solo shutout of the season in her first start of 2008 as Benge didn't need to make a save. Today's shutout of Gallaudet marked the fourth this season for SMCM.
Sophomore Casey McCullough (Susanville, Calif./California School f/t Deaf-Fremont) registered 11 saves in the loss for Gallaudet.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, September 27 as St. Mary's travels to Dover, Del. to take on CAC foe, Wesley College, at 1:00.
