Three Selected for NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-Region Squad

Complete List of Scholar All-Region Teams

Kansas City, Kans. - Seniors Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) and Sarah Grady (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and junior Karisa Carroll (Long Island, N.Y./Ward Melville) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with selections to the 2008 NSCAA/adidas® College Women Scholar All-East Region Teams.  The Scholar All-East Region Teams were released on January 9.

Oben earned second team honors, while Grady garnered a spot on the third team and Carroll received honorable mention laurels.

MARIE OBEN
Oben Oben is a psychology major with a minor in neuroscience who sports a 3.77 GPA.  She has made the Dean's List all seven semesters and was inducted into the Nu Rho Psi Neuroscience and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Societies this past fall.  Oben is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Student-Athlete and Psi Chi Psychology Honor Societies while being a three-time member of the CAC All-Academic Team and St. Mary's 3.0 Club.

Off the soccer field, she serves as vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board and as the lead student of the sports information student staff.  Oben is also a student assistant on the Institutional Review Board.

She was a two-time All-Capital Athletic Conference selection, earning first team honors in 2008 after helping the Seahawks capture their first-ever CAC title and first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.  Oben picked up All-CAC Second Team accolades in 2006 when she guided St. Mary's to the program's first-ever appearance in the CAC Championship game.

For her four-year career, Oben played in 62 games with 60 starts and boasted a 1.30 GAA in 5,589 minutes played.  She finished her senior campaign second in the league in saves per game with a 5.13 average, third with a .837 save percentage, tied for third with six shutouts, and fourth with a 0.97 GAA.

SARAH GRADY
Grady A biology major with a minor in neuroscience, Grady boasts a 3.97 cumulative GPA as a four-year letter winner for the Seahawk women's soccer program and was a Rhodes Scholar candidate this year.

She has been a three-year member of the Women in Science House, leading weekly tutoring sessions and participating in the Park Hall Elementary School science outreach program.  Grady is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Student-Athlete and Tri-Beta Biological Honor Societies and was inducted into the Nu Rho Psi Neuroscience and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Societies this past fall.  Grady helps to organize talks by local women in science as well.  She solely organized and ran a used soccer equipment drive that amassed over 1,000 pieces of equipment to be donated to the Eurosport Passback program, reaching out to local and national clubs, former coaches, and tournament directors for a successful drive.

Grady is both a St. Mary's and Nitze Scholar who has been a member of the Dean's List every semester.  Currently ranked in the Top 10% of her class, she was granted an internship through the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab during the summer of 2007.  This past year, Grady had first authorship on a poster that was presented to the American Microbiology Society.

On the soccer pitch, Grady has amassed nine goals and five assists for 23 points in 60 games played with 38 starts.  She earned a spot on the All-CAC Second Team as a freshman after finishing the season third in scoring with 11 points (5g, 1a).  Grady has also been a three-year member of the CAC All-Academic Team as well as St. Mary's 3.0 Club.  In 2006, she helped the Seahawks advance to the program's first-ever appearance in the CAC Championship game.  This season, Grady was a key member of St. Mary's winning the program's first-ever CAC title and making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. 

KARISA CARROLL
Carroll Carroll is a chemistry major with a minor in Spanish who owns a 3.76 GPA.  She has made the Dean's List every semester and is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society.  Carroll is also a two-time member of the CAC All-Academic Team and St. Mary's 3.0 Club.  She is also a St. Mary's and Nitze Scholar.

When not playing soccer, Carroll serves as a Spanish tutor and volunteers as the local hospital.  She is an active member of the St. Mary's Advising Students in Health, which aids students pursuing a career in the health sciences, and St. Mary's American Chemical Society, which is dedicated to helping people to enjoy chemistry.  Carroll is a two-time all-region and all-conference pick in lacrosse as well.

She has started and played in all but two games since donning a Seahawk uniform and during her three years, the Seahawks have posted a 30-20-6 mark.  Carroll has notched eight points (2g, 4a) from her defensive position and St. Mary's made the program's first two appearances in the CAC championship game, including capturing the conference title and advancing to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2008.  Carroll was named to the 2008 All-CAC Second Team as a defender.
