Grady Headlines CoSIDA Womens Soccer Academic All-District Team
Delaware, Ohio - Senior Sarah Grady (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team leads three Seahawks on the 2008 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District II College Division Women's Soccer Team as presented by ESPN The Magazine. The Academic All-District Teams were released on October 30.
Grady earned first team honors after being named to the second team a year ago. Seniors Katie Klotz (Bowie, Md./Good Counsel) and Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) were both selected to the third team.
With her first team selection, Grady now advances to the national ballot and has the potential to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors.
SARAH GRADY
A biology major with a minor in neuroscience,
Grady boasts a 3.97 cumulative GPA as a four-year
letter winner for the Seahawk women's soccer program and is a
Rhodes Scholar candidate this year.
She has been a three-year member of the Women in Science House, leading weekly tutoring sessions and participating in the Park Hall Elementary School science outreach program. Grady is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Student-Athlete and Tri-Beta Biological Honor Societies, while she will be inducted into the Nu Rho Psi Neuroscience and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Societies later this fall. Grady helps to organize talks by local women in science and solely organized and ran a used soccer equipment drive that amassed over 1,000 pieces of equipment to be donated to the Eurosport Passback program, reaching out to local and national clubs, former coaches, and tournament directors for a successful drive.
Grady is both a St. Mary's and Nitze Scholar who has been a member of the Dean's List every semester. Currently ranked in the Top 10% of her class, she was granted an internship through the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab during the summer of 2007. This past year, Grady had first authorship on a poster that was presented to the American Microbiology Society.
On the soccer pitch, Grady has amassed nine goals and five assists for 23 points in 56 games played with 34 starts. She earned a spot on the All-Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Second Team as a freshman after finishing the season third in scoring with 11 points (5g, 1a). Grady has also been a three-year member of the CAC All-Academic Team as well as St. Mary's Athletics 3.0 Club. In 2006, she helped the Seahawks advance to the program's first-ever appearance in the CAC Championship game.
KATIE KLOTZ
Klotz is a psychology major who owns a
3.49 GPA. She made the Dean's List four out of six semesters
and was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the national student-athlete
honor society, last year. Klotz is also a
three-time member of the CAC All-Academic Team and St. Mary's 3.0
Club.
When not playing soccer, Klotz sings with The Nightingale A Capella group and also sings the national anthem before every home women's soccer contest. She is also a member of the sports information student staff. Last spring, Klotz spent a semester abroad in Australia.
She has played in 65 career games with 61 starts, registering 12 goals, including four game-winning goals, and three assists during her tenure as a Seahawk. Klotz was named as the 2006 CAC Player-of-the-Year as she was third in scoring on the team with 15 points (7g, 1a) as a defensive midfielder. She also helped the Seahawks advance to the program's first-ever appearance in the CAC Championship game. Klotz is also a two-time All-CAC First Team selection at both midfield and defense.
MARIE OBEN
Oben is a psychology major with a minor
in neuroscience who sports a 3.77 GPA. She has made the
Dean's List all six semesters and will be inducted into the Nu Rho
Psi Neuroscience and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Societies
this fall. Oben is a member of the Psi Chi
Psychology Honor Society while being a three-time member of the CAC
All-Academic Team and St. Mary's 3.0 Club.
Off the soccer field, she is on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board as the vice president and serves as the lead student of the sports information student staff. Oben is also a student assistant on the Institutional Review Board.
As a four-year letterwinner, she was an All-CAC Second Team selection in 2006 when she guided the Seahawks to the program's first-ever appearance in the CAC Championship game. Oben has played in 58 career games with 56 starts and owns a 1.33 career GAA. This season, she is third in the league with a .844 save percentage and fourth with a 0.97 GAA.
