Newman, Decker Represent Seahawk Women's Lacrosse in All-Region Selections

Oxford, Ohio – Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) both claimed spots on the 2013 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Chesapeake Region teams as announced by the IWLCA Tuesday. Newman gained a first team nod while Decker repeated as a second team pick.

The IWLCA honored 256 student-athletes in Division III with a selection to one of the eight All-Region teams. These athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-America teams, which will be announced on May 9. The IWLCA will honor the national All-Americans at the IWLCA All-America banquet on May 25 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.

The first team All-Region selection comes on the heels of Newman being named the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year as well as earning a first team All-CAC selection. The 5-3 first-year midfielder became the ninth Seahawk to garner the CAC rookie award since the award's inception in 1997, including St. Mary's winning five in a row between 1998 and 2002.

Newman made an immediate impact for St. Mary's as she started all 17 contests and finished second in scoring. She tallied a team-best 39 goals and scooped up a team-leading 56 ground balls. Newman also came in second in assists (14) and points (53) as well as caused turnovers (14). She collected eight hat tricks in her rookie campaign, including season-highs of seven goals, two assists, and nine points at the University of Mary Washington on April 10.

Newman ended the 2013 season as the conference leader with 18 free-position goals while ranking second in ground balls, sixth in points, tied for seventh in goals, and ninth in assists.

Decker is now a two-time all-region selection and two-time conference all-star. The 5-8 defender was a defensive stalwart for the Seahawks for the second year in a row, leading the team once again in caused turnovers with 34 this season. She finished her sophomore campaign ranked third in the CAC while being 51st in Division III with 2.0 caused turnovers per game. Decker is second on the team as well with 34 ground balls, ranking her tied for eighth in the league.

St. Mary's finished out this year's campaign with an 8-10 (3-3 CAC) overall record, advancing to the semifinals of the 2013 CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament for the first time since 2010.
