Shackelford, Decker Earn Women’s Lacrosse All-Region Honors
Oxford, Ohio – Junior Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and first-year Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) represented the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team on the 2012 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Chesapeake Region as announced by the IWLCA Friday afternoon. Shackelford and Decker both garnered spots on the second team.
Shackelford's all-region award comes on the heels of her first selection as a first team All-Capital Athletic Conference all-star. She finished the season third on the team in scoring with a team-best 30 goals and 36 points. The 5-4 midfielder paced the Seahawks with 43 draw controls while ranking second with 43 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. Shackelford ranked tied for seventh in the conference in ground balls, tied for 11th in draw controls, tied for 16th in caused turnovers, and tied for 19th in goals. She tallied a career-best four goals twice while totaling a career-high six points in a 16-8 win at Marymount (Va.) University on March 24. Shackelford scooped up a career-best eight loose balls in a 19-12 victory at Wesley College on April 10.
Decker now adds an all-region selection to her first-year resume after picking up second team All-CAC honors. The 5-8 defender paced the league in caused turnovers with 40 while ranking 13th in Division III with a 2.35 average. She also ranked third in the conference in ground balls with a team-best 54. Decker scored four goals and grabbed three draw controls to help out offensively as well. She hustled to a season-best seven ground balls twice while forcing four turnovers four times.
St. Mary's ended the 2012 campaign with an 8-9 (4-4 CAC) record for fifth in the regular-season conference standings.
