Three Seahawk Women's Lacrosse Players Named All-Conference
York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team had three of its members selected to the 2012 All-Capital Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Team as announced by league commissioner, Tom Byrnes, Thursday afternoon.
Junior Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) garnered a first team nod while junior Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) claimed two spots on the second team. All three are first time all-conference honorees.
Shackelford finished the season third on the team in scoring with a team-best 30 goals and 36 points. She paced the Seahawks with 43 draw controls while ranking second with 43 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. The 5-4 midfielder ranked tied for seventh in the conference in ground balls, tied for eighth in draw controls, 14th in caused turnovers, and 19th in goals. Shackelford tallied a career-best four goals twice while totaling a career-high six points in a 16-8 win at Marymount (Va.) University on March 24. She scooped up a career-best eight loose balls in a 19-12 victory at Wesley College on April 10.
Shafer was the Seahawks' leading scorer with 48 points on 28 goals and 20 assists. She was tied for ninth in the conference in assists, 16th in points, and tied for 20th in goals. The 5-6 attacker contributed 26 draw controls, 15 ground balls, and nine caused turnovers. Shafer had career-bests of five goals and five draw controls in a 19-12 win at Frostburg State University on April 14 while picking up career-highs of three assists and five points at Marymount.
Decker continues to bolster her first-year resume, adding a second team all-conference nod in lacrosse to her CAC Co-Rookie of the Year award in field hockey. The 5-8 defender paced the CAC in caused turnovers with 40 while ranking 14th in Division III with a 2.35 average. She also ranked third in the conference in ground balls with a team-best 54. Decker scored four goals and grabbed three draw controls to help out offensively as well. She hustled to a season-best seven ground balls twice while forcing four turnovers four times.
St. Mary's ended the 2012 campaign with an 8-9 (4-4 CAC) record for fifth in the regular-season conference standings.
