Mirkin, Simpson Named to Women's Lacrosse All-Region Teams

Grand Lake, Colo. – St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse players Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) and Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) earned second team Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Chesapeake Region honors for the 2011 season as announced by the IWLCA on Thursday afternoon.

This is Mirkin's second consecutive selection to the all-region second team after earning the same honor last season.  The 5-6 senior midfielder is now a two-time all-region pick as well as a two-time all-conference honoree.  She paced the team in draw controls (62), ground balls (43), goals (41) and caused turnovers (24) while ranking second in points (67) and assists (26).  Mirkin finished as the conference leader in draw controls while ranking third in ground balls and sixth in assists.  She tallied at least one point in 31 consecutive games spanning over two seasons (2010 and 2011).

Simpson continues to add to her postseason accolades with another first as the 5-1 junior goalkeeper is making her first-ever appearance on an all-region team.  She currently ranks ninth in Division III in save percentage with a conference-best 52.1 percent.  Simpson posted a league fourth-best 9.61 goals-against average while ranking fourth on the team with 30 ground balls and adding three caused turnovers.

St. Mary's ended this year's season with a 12-6 (5-3 CAC) record under first-year head coach Lisa Valentine as the Seahawks finished tied for fourth in the regular-season standings.
