St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Marymount (VA)
St. Mary's City, Md. – An 11-goal first half propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 17-4 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount (Va.) University on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) matched her season-best with four goals while adding two assists to lead the Seahawks in the win.
The win helps St. Mary's (11-5, 5-3 CAC) clinch the fourth seed in the 2011 CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament and a home first-round contest on Saturday, April 16. The Seahawks will face York College of Pennsylvania (12-3, 5-3 CAC), the No. 5 seed, at Seahawk Stadium at 2:00 pm.
Senior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) finished with four points for St. Mary's with two goals and two assists while senior attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and sophomore midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) each contributed two goals and an assist.
The Seahawks scored two goals in 13 seconds to sport a 2-0 lead at the 24:00 mark before first-year Rachel Duff (Leesburg, Va./Broad Run) put Marymount on the board with an unassisted goal at 23:23. St. Mary's rattled off six straight to boast an 8-1 advantage with 9:13 left in the first half. Senior Lori Renner (Columbus, Ga./Columbus) ended the Saint scoreless drought with a goal at 3:18. The Seahawks then notched three goals in the final 3:04, including a pair from junior attacker Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) in 27 seconds, to claim an 11-2 halftime margin.
Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Flood (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) paced Marymount (5-9, 2-6 CAC) in the loss with two goals and two draw controls.
St. Mary's stretched its scoring run to eight in a row as the Seahawks tallied five consecutive goals to start off the second half to augment their lead to 16-2 at 16:53. Flood converted on a free position shot and netted an unassisted goal in a span of 3:22 while first-year midfielder Claire Tiffany (California, Md./Leonardtown) tacked on the final Seahawk goal with 8:49 remaining.
St. Mary's dominated ground balls, 18 to 8, as junior goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) scooped up a game-high five loose balls while senior defender Arianna Larrimore (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) added three pick-ups.
Simpson finished with six saves and one caused turnover in 46 minutes before giving way to senior Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie). Roberts had one stop and yielded one goal in the final 14 minutes of the game.
