Seahawks Escape with 17-14 Win over Marymount (VA)
Boyds, Md. – Junior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) put forth a career day in leading St. Mary's College of Maryland to a 17-14 Capital Athletic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Marymount (Va.) University as the Seahawks overcame a 6-2 deficit at the Maryland SoccerPlex Wednesday afternoon.
Mirkin tallied career-highs of four goals, two assists, and six points while sophomore midfielder Laura Leigh Cooper (Fruitland, Md./James M. Bennett) added four goals, too. Senior captain Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and first-year midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) each contributed four points to the Seahawk offense.
Marymount (3-8, 2-3 CAC) jumped out to a 6-2 lead at 18:54 as the Saints opened up the contest with a 3-0 run behind two goals from sophomore Tancy Weatherford (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield). The Seahawks quickly got back in the game with two goals before Marymount added another three goals for the four-goal cushion.
St. Mary's (5-7, 3-2 CAC) rattled off six goals to claim its first lead of the game and head into halftime with a two-goal advantage.
Weatherford finished with a game-high five goals for the Saints while senior midfielder Sara Horne (Severna Park, Md./Mount deSales) tallied four goals. First-year midfielder Stephanie Flood (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) registered four points as well with a hat trick and an assist.
Weatherford and Horne scored 36 seconds apart to knot the game at 8-all before St. Mary's regained a 10-9 lead as Parker and Cooper sandwiched a Horne goal at 24:36. Weatherford and Flood briefly returned the lead to the Saints - an 11-10 margin at 22:46. Cooper and Horne each scored to maintain the game in Marymount's favor (12-11) with 18:25 remaining in the game.
The Seahawks broke open the tight game with another 6-0 run to boast a 17-12 lead at 7:22. Weatherford and Flood netted the Saints final two goals.
St. Mary's dominated all offensive categories as the Seahawks outshot Marymount, 48-23, and outhustled the Saints, 43-32, in ground balls while claiming a 22-10 advantage in draw controls. Cooper and senior captain Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) each notched a game-high five draws while Mirkin and first-year Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scooped up a game-best six loose balls apiece.
Junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made five saves in 48:54 minutes of relief to pick up her third win of the season. Senior Ashley Dodge (Clifton Springs, N.Y./Midlakes) turned away 21 shots in the loss, including 15 stops in the first half.
The Seahawks will travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on No. 17 Stevenson University in a league tilt this Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 pm.
