McDaniel Edges St. Mary’s by Two

Box Score

Westminster, Md. - McDaniel College overcame a four-goal deficit with the help of a five-goal effort from senior Brittany Baer (Manchester, Md./Westminster) as the Green Terror rallied for a 12-10 non-conference win over St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon.  With the win, McDaniel remains undefeated on the season at 3-0.

Joining Baer with multiple goal efforts were midfielders Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) as both tallied two goals apiece on the day while junior attacker Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) notched three helpers.  Watkins scooped up a game-high six ground balls to guide McDaniel to a 24-15 margin in ground balls.

McDaniel drew blood first with Baer's first goal of the day off an assist from graduate Erinn Hopkins (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) at 25:48.  However, St. Mary's scored six of the next seven goals to boast a 6-2 lead with 8:08 remaining in the first half as senior captain Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) scored twice.

Watkins and junior attacker Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scored the next two goals to help McDaniel close the gap as the Green Terror headed intermission down 6-4.

Fallon-Oben paced the Seahawks (0-3) in scoring with five points on four goals and an assist while first-year midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) added two goals and assisted on two others.

Baer kicked off the second half with three straight goals in a 2:15-minute span to extend the Green Terror run to five unanswered scores.  Parker and Fallon-Oben put an end to St. Mary's scoring drought with back-to-back goals, pulling the Seahawks to within 9-8 at 17:40.  Senior attacker Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) converted on a free position shot at 11:56 to keep SMCM close at 10-9.

After first-year midfielder Anne Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) provided a three-goal cushion, Fallon-Oben brought her team to within two with 2:47 remaining in regulation.  The Green Terror stepped up in the final 2:47, holding St. Mary's to just one shot.

Senior goalkeeper Leanne Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) did her part to preserve the McDaniel win with seven stops.

The Seahawks doubled up on McDaniel in draw controls, 16 to 8, as Parker and junior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) combined for nine.

Junior Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) turned away eight shots and gave up nine goals in the first 41 minutes before sophomore Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished out the game with three saves and three goals against.

St. Mary's will return to action Tuesday, March 9 as the Seahawks host conference foe, University of Mary Washington, at 4:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium.  This game was rescheduled from February 20.
