Charlottesville, Va. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team remained at No. 16 for the second consecutive week in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Poll (Week 5).
Since suffering a 17-6 setback at the hands of then No. 9 Washington & Lee on February 21, the Seahawks have been on a six-game tear. St. Mary's has posted wins over Wesley (24-5), No. 15 Dickinson (10-5), Washington (Md.) (17-10), McDaniel (11-10), Roanoke (14-9), and Virginia Wesleyan (13-7).
Six-time defending Capital Athletic Conference champion, Salisbury, remained at No. 2 for the third straight week, receiving six first-place votes. Mary Washington entered the poll for the first time this season at No. 18.
Senior midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) continues to build her NCAA Division III women's lacrosse record for consecutive games with at least one goal as the streak currently stands at 49. Carrier surpassed the old mark of 45 established by Scranton's Liz Baumbach from March 28, 2001 to May 10, 2003. She started her streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 in a loss to Mary Washington.
Carrier and senior midfielder Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) are tied for the team lead in scoring with 26 points each as both have scored 22 goals and dished out four assists thus far.
Junior attacker Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) has dished out a team-best 14 assists to be third in scoring with five goals and 19 points.
Defensively, junior defender Karisa Carroll (Long Island, N.Y./Ward Melville) has scooped up a team-high 21 ground balls and caused nine turnovers.
In goal, freshman Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) owns a 9.24 GAA in 383 minutes of action.
The Seahawks have six more games left in their fantastic voyage up-and-down the East Coast. St. Mary's seven-game road trip began March 14 at Virginia Wesleyan and will continue tomorrow in Washington, D.C. as the Seahawks take on No. 13 Catholic at 4:00. They will follow that match-up with a league contest at York (Pa.) on March 21 to wrap up Spring Break.
