Carrier Earns All-America Honors for the Second Straight Season
Charlottesville, Va. - Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) was the lone representative for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team on the 2009 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA)/US Lacrosse All-America teams as announced by the IWLCA Wednesday afternoon.
The 2009 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year, Carrier was named to the All-America First Team after being selected to the second team last season. She also garnered a spot on the www.womenslacrose.com All-America First Team after earning a third team nod a year ago.
The IWLCA and US Lacrosse honored 48 student-athletes in Division III with a selection on one of the three All-America teams. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the national All-Americans at the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American banquet on Saturday, June 13 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
Carrier became the fourth St. Mary's player to earn conference player of the year honors when the all-conference squads were announced May 4. She joined two-time winner Gia Trionfo (1998, 1999), Kathy Holmes (2002), and Carol Schmoeller (2004). The senior midfielder picked up her third consecutive All-CAC First Team selection as well.
The 2008 CAC Women's Soccer Player of the Year, Carrier was also just the third student-athlete in the 19-year history of the CAC to win two player-of-the-year awards during the same academic year. Gallaudet's volleyball and basketball superstar, Rhonda Jo Miller, was the CAC Player of the Year in both sports during her freshman (1996-97) and sophomore (1997-98) seasons, while Goucher's running standout, Jeff Olenick, accomplished the feat in cross country and track & field during the 2000-01 academic year.
Following last week's all-region announcement, Carrier is a four-time All-Chesapeake Region First Team honoree. She finished her senior campaign as the Seahawks' leading scorer for the fourth consecutive season as she tallied 80 points on 64 goals and 16 assists. The team captain also paced the team in free-position goals as Carrier went 18-of-23 from the eight-meter arc. For the Seahawks, Carrier was second in draw controls (39) and third in caused turnovers (17). She matched a career-best with four assists en route to a season-high eight points in a CAC semifinal loss to Mary Washington, while scoring a season-best six goals twice.
Carrier ended her four-year career with 246 goals and 311 points to leave St. Mary's as the school's all-time leader in both categories, while winning 184 draw controls and hustling to 158 ground balls. She also scored at least one goal in 59 consecutive games, starting her freshman year on April 15, 2006 and ending on April 21, 2009.
St. Mary's finished the 2009 campaign with a 12-5 overall record, taking second in the conference standings with a 6-1 mark. The Seahawks bowed out of the CAC Tournament with a semifinal loss to Mary Washington.
