Mathisen Leads St. Mary’s in CAC Loss at York

YORK, Pa. - Janey Mathisen led the St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks (4-11, 0-4 CAC) with a season-best 14 points in a CAC loss at York (Pa.) (6-9, 1-3 CAC) Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon. The Seahawks fell to the Spartans 61-53.

How It Happened

  • St. Mary's battled back from an early deficit by outscoring York 14-4 to end the first quarter. Kelli Jenkins hit three of five three-pointers, while Mathisen added a three to take a 14-11 lead with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter. Hallie Persell followed with a layup in traffic to extend the Seahawks lead to 16-11 to conclude the first stanza of action.

  • St. Mary's continued to ride their momentum by opening the second quarter on a 9-1 run, extending their lead to 25-12 at the 4:55 mark. Persell led the charge during the run, recording five points, while Gina Seifert and Mathisen sunk layups. The Spartans responded by finishing the half strong, tallying six straight points from three different scorers. St. Mary's headed into the halftime with a 25-18 lead.

  • York came out of halftime firing on all cylinders and completed an 11-3 run to regain a 29-28 lead with 6:48 remaining in the third stanza. The Spartans continued to distance themselves from the Seahawks, and outscored St. Mary's 26-14 in the third quarter. The Seahawks headed to the fourth quarter trailing the Spartans 44-39.

  • St. Mary's continued to trail York by five with under five minutes left to play and looked to start a comeback down the stretch. However, the Spartans answered St. Mary's scores with points of their own to hold on for the victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Mathisen led the Seahawk offensive attack with 14 points, a season-high for the junior guard.

  • Jenkins tallied 12 points for St. Mary's, shooting just under 50 percent from three-point range.

  • Persell contributed in a variety of ways for the Seahawks, knocking down 11 points and leading the team in rebounds with nine.

  • Katie McGowan was the lone player to record a double-double on the afternoon, tallying 23 points and 10 rebounds.
