Harrisonburg, Va. – In their first action in a week, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team battled on the road but came up short Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's (2-7) dropped a 61-50 non-conference decision to the host Eastern Mennonite University Royals (4-7). Forwards Gina Seifert (Owings, Md./Northern) and Hallie Persell (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) combined for 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Seahawks.

How It Happened

  • Sophomore guard Kyaira Priest (Lexington Park, Md./Chopticon) and Persell gave St. Mary's a one-point lead on two separate occasions but the hosts ended the first quarter on an 8-2 run to claim a 12-7 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • A Persell three-pointer helped the Seahawks regain the advantage, 14-13, momentarily at 8:07 before Eastern Mennonite usurped the lead once again. Five straight points from guards Cassidy Kupchinskas (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and Katie Robey (Kensington, Md./Georgetown Visitation) put St. Mary's back on top by three with 3:10 left in the half. EMU once again responded and headed into the locker room with a 28-24 lead following a 10-3 run.
  • The Royals opened up the third frame with an 18-4 run and boasted their biggest lead of the game, 46-28, at 3:34 as Kiana Childress capped the run with a layup in the paint. Undaunted, St. Mary's answered back with an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to seven at the end of three quarters. Junior forward Christine McKee (Frederick, Md./Urbana) tallied six straight points in the run.
  • The Seahawks' momentum continued in the fourth, stretching their run to 21-4 to pull within one at 6:48. A pair of triples and four consecutive points by Seifert fueled the 10-4 SMCM run to start the fourth. St. Mary's would get no closer as EMU scored 11 of the game's final 12 points for its second straight win.

Inside the Box Score

  • Seifert led the way for the Seahawks with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting while adding a game-best nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Seifert's nine caroms helped St. Mary's edged the Royals, 39-38, on the glass.
  • Persell came off the bench to contribute 10 points and three boards in 18 minutes.
  • Lindsey Krisak tallied a game-high 13 points while Precious Waddy added 10 points off the bench to lead Eastern Mennonite.
