Second-Half Rally Pushes Marymount (VA) Past St. Mary's Women's Basketball
St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior forward Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) recorded her third 20+ point game of the season but her efforts fell short as Marymount (Va.) University's second-half comeback rally lifted the Saints to a 66-62 win over the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks (10-11, 6-7 CAC) owned a 39-26 advantage with 18:45 left in the game and seemed on the verge of notching their 11th win of the season. But Marymount shot 44.8 percent from the field in the second half while limiting St. Mary's to seven field goals to quickly turn things around.
Marymount (10-8, 8-4 CAC) methodically trimmed the deficit, outscoring the Seahawks, 25-14, in a 14-minute span to claim its first lead of the second half – 51-50 at 4:57 on a layup by senior forward Maame Amponsah (Beltsville, Md./Lanham Christian). Roberts went 4-for-4 in back-to-back trips to the free throw line in a 57-second block to knot the game twice.
Sophomore guard Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and first-year forward Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) each brought the Seahawks within three at 1:53 and 00:20 but junior guard Shannon Gough (Chester, N.Y./Burke Catholic) connected on two from the charity stripe to seal the win.
Roberts finished with 20 points, season-best nine rebounds and three assists while Sham and Lewis each tallied 12 points. Lewis registered her second double-double of the season as she hauled in 10 boards as well.
The Seahawks went to the line 30 times and made 21 of their attempts while Marymount was 12-of-18 from the charity stripe.
Amponsah paced Marymount with a double-double on 19 points and 20 caroms while seniors Beth Wiggins (Burke, N.Y./Franklin Academy) and Amanda Billy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers) added 16 and 14, respectively.
St. Mary's looks to snap its two-game losing skid next Wednesday, February 9 when the Seahawks travel to the Eastern Shore to take on Salisbury University in conference action at 6:00 pm.
