St. Mary’s Joining WBCA Pink Zone™

St. Mary's City, Md. - This Saturday, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's and men's basketball teams will join the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in promoting breast cancer awareness by participating in the 2009 WBCA Pink ZoneTM initiative for the second consecutive year.  Saturday's contests against the visiting Spartans of York (Pa.) College will serve to raise awareness and donations in support of breast cancer research.

St. Mary's is one of over 1,250 schools and organizations that have committed to be on board for the WBCA Pink ZoneTM.  The Seahawks are encouraging fans to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

The WBCA Pink ZoneTM initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.  The week set aside for this year's initiative is February 13-22, however many schools, like St. Mary's, are participating outside of that window due to scheduling conflicts.

The Seahawks welcome York to the Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader.  The women's game tips-off at 2:00 followed by the men's game at 4:00.

Informational pamphlets and brochures regarding breast cancer will be available at the ticket table.

All proceeds received through ticket sales and donations will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.  The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund is a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against cancer through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

The late Kay Yow, North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, was a past president and founding member of the WBCA, and a galvanizing voice for the Association.  Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and lost her battle with the disease on January 24, 2009.

The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, was launched on December 3, 2007 and since its launch, the Fund has raised over $700,000.
