Susquehanna Claims Cherry Cove/Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament

St. Mary's City, Md. - Cherry Cove/Seahawk All-Tournament Team members, junior Ashley Watkins (La Habra Heights, Calif./Rosary) and freshman Libby Shober (Barnesville, Pa./Marian Catholic), helped the Susquehanna University women's basketball team to a 62-55 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland to capture the 2008 Cherry Cove/Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Watkins finished the two-day tournament with 22 points and went 8-of-8 from the free throw line, while Shober tallied 21 points and 17 rebounds as the duo headlined the all-tournament team. Joining them on the team from St. Mary's was senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) who notched 38 points and 15 rebounds.
Senior guard Emily Cerankowski (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) represented FDU-Florham on the all-tournament team as Cerankowski poured in a tournament-high 45 points, including 27 points in today's 79-55 consolation win over Ramapo College. Ramapo's sophomore guard Stephanie Cannizzaro (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) was the Roadrunners' representative as Cannizzaro picked up 30 points and seven boards.
Susquehanna (2-0) jumped out to a 9-4 lead as Shober dropped in a pair of lay-ups but consecutive jumpers by Scott and sophomores Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) and Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./The Barrie School) gave the Seahawks (1-1) their first lead of the game - 10-9 at 12:47. The remainder of the first half saw the two teams trading baskets as the score was tied four times, including 30-30 at halftime.
Scott led all players at the half as she notched 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, while Shober paced the Crusaders with six points and five boards.
The Crusaders opened up the second half on a 13-5 run to take control of the game, leading by eight at four different points with the last one coming at 5:46 (50-42). Roberts sparked an 8-1 run with a jumper to pull St. Mary's within 51-50 at 3:27 as Scott capped the run with a long-range shot. Susquehanna sealed the win by going 9-of-10 down the stretch.
Shober picked up a double-double on 12 points
and 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Rachael
Hughes (Gordon, Pa./Schuylkill) also had a dozen
points. Sophomore guard Erika Barron
(Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) added 10 and dished out a game-high six
assists.
Scott finished the game with a season-high 23
points, while Roberts chipped in 11 points and
hauled in a career-high eight caroms. Junior center
Alex Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) also had
eight boards.
The Seahawks return to action this Tuesday, November 18 as St. Mary's welcomes Catholic University to the ARC Arena for a non-conference contest at 7:00.
