St. Marys Easily Handles Johns Hopkins, 71-47
St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior guard Megan Uglik (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) surpassed the 1000-point mark with her 15 points as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball posted a decisive 71-47 victory over Johns Hopkins University in non-conference action Monday afternoon. Uglik now has 1,001 points for her career.
The Seahawks (10-5) are currently riding a three-game winning streak in which they are averaging 81.7 points per game, while holding their opponents to 40.7 points per contest. St. Mary's has outscored its competition, 245-122, in the last three outings.
St. Mary's boasted a double digit margin for 34:41 minutes of the game following a 13-3 start to the contest that was sparked by an Uglik three-pointer at the 19:45-mark. The Seahawks finished the afternoon shooting 50.0%, including 71.4% from three-point range.
In the first half, St. Mary's connected on 16-of-29 attempts, which included making all four three-pointers attempted, to own a 43-18 advantage at halftime. Uglik and sophomore guard Steph Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each had 11 first-half points to lead all players. Johns Hopkins' sophomore guard Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) netted seven to pace her squad.
The Seahawk defense held the Blue Jays (5-9) to only seven field goals made in the first half, including 0-for-5 from downtown. St. Mary's also out-rebounded JHU, 27-19 in the first 20 minutes.
The Blue Jays fired off 17 three-point attempts in the second half and connected on only three to finish the game, 3-of-22 from behind the arc. The bright spot for JHU was freshman forward Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) who picked up nine second-half points to end the afternoon as the only player in double figures for the Blue Jays.
Saint-Aubin notched a game-high 19 points, while Uglik added 15 and equaled her season-best with eight assists. Junior forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) matched her season-high with nine rebounds and dished out a season-best four assists.
Burton finished with a double-double for Hopkins with 11 points and a game-high 10 caroms. Wynn and senior forward Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) each had nine for the Blue Jays.
St. Mary's will return to action this Wednesday when the Seahawks entertain Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Wesley College, at 6:00. Johns Hopkins will host Centennial Conference foe, McDaniel College, on Thursday night at 7:00.
