St. Marys Captures MAISA Sloops

Annapolis, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team never relinquished its hold of first place as the Seahawks claimed top honors at the MAISA Sloop Championship (October 3-4) hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.
With their first-place finish, the Seahawks, who totaled 29 points in nine races, qualified for the ICSA Sloop Nationals to be hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. on October 23-25. Navy also earned a berth at nationals with its second-place finish, placing eight points out of first place.
St. Mary's has twice claimed the ICSA Sloop Nationals title, the first being in 1994 and the last in 2007. The Seahawks finished third at last year's nationals behind the efforts of Ted Hale '10, Derick Vranizan '09, Michael Menninger '11, and Mike Kuschner '10.
Sailing for the Seahawks this weekend were seniors Ted Hale (St. Inigoes, Md.) and Mike Kuschner (San Francisco, Calif.), junior Michael Menninger (Newport Beach, Calif.), and sophomore Wick Dudley (Queenstown, Md.). Minus Dudley, this same group finished second at last year's MAISA Sloops behind SUNY Maritime, missing top honors by two points.
